This summer, while shopping at Central Market in Detroit Lakes, MN, I was hunting for a recipe ingredient and struggling to find it in a grocery store that I don’t frequent too often. I ran into the nicest employee there and she took me to the bulk food aisle in the store to see if it was available there.

I’ve gotta tell you, I was amazed! I know I’ve seen all those bulk bins in stores before but I think with my recent transitions in how I cook and eat, this aisle really hit home. Now, the bulk food aisle in Central Market is also top notch with a large selection (even spices) and very cool automated weighing and labeling system (geek in me loved it) but I’ve found that there are also good bulk food aisles in the Fargo grocery stores. The best bulk food selection is in Cash Wise, but the trick is that there are really two there — a group of bins in near the produce section, and a larger group in the health food section. Together, it’s a pretty good option for much of what I’m shopping for.

Ideas on what to get in the bulk aisle at your grocery store

  • Flax seed
  • Quinoa
  • Almonds
  • Spices that you only use occasionally
  • Steel cut oats
  • Pepitas (aka pumpkin seeds)
  • Shelled sunflower seeds (I’ve even found some that are chocolate covered that are a great addition to homemade granola bars)
  • Beans
  • Many other items — it’s a great time to try just a small amount of a new grain, nut or bean and introduce it to your family
